When you think of Newport, what's the first word that comes to mind? Castles? Rich Culture? Perfect vacation spot? Historically, according to Wikipedia.org, Newport has been a port since medieval times when the first Newport Castle was built by the Normans. The town is located at the mouth of the River Usk where it enters the River Severn estuary. It grew significantly in the 19th century when its port became the focus of coal exports from the eastern South Wales Valleys.


And today, it is now a vibrant city with a fascinating history. Famous for its docks, Newport is full of cultural surprises and is certainly a Welsh city on the rise. Here are some of the perfect attractions to visit the next time you’re in this South Wales destination.

  1. Newport Castle is a ruined castle in Newport, Wales. It was built in the 14th century, with the purpose of managing the crossing of the River Usk.

  2. Newport Transporter Bridge is a grade I-listed transporter bridge that dominates Newport's skyline that has contributed to more than just the transport network. Opened in 1906, it was built to take workers to and from Lysaght's steelworks.

  3. West Usk Lighthouse is the latest site to star. It is a landmark that has appeared on prime time television as the city and its environs chalked up yet another appearance as a location for Doctor Who.

  4. Caerleon Amphitheater was built around the year 90 CE outside fortress walls that went up around 74 CE. Over 6,000 spectators could fill the seats, more people than were serving in the second Roman legion occupying the area.
